Choosing The Right Admixture

Ready-mix concrete stands out as a robust and durable material, particularly well-suited for horizontal surfaces like driveways and parking lots. In contrast to on-site mixed concrete, which lacks the controlled conditions of a ready-mix plant, the latter provides a consistent and reliable product.

Choosing the appropriate admixture for your ready-mix concrete recipe plays a pivotal role in achieving long-lasting results. The selection depends on the working conditions and the intended function of the concrete.

Admixtures are materials added to mix designs other than water, aggregate, hydraulic cement and reinforcing additives. Admixtures are added to batches right before mixing or while mixing occurs. Depending on the admixture chosen, the characteristics of the concrete will change.

Retarding

Retarding admixtures, composed of organic and inorganic materials, slow down the setting rate, offering benefits such as increased strength and compensation for heat’s impact on setting times. Some types offer water-reducing capacity.

Super Plasticizers

Super plasticizers, also known as high-range water-reducing admixtures, enhance workability by raising the slump. While costlier, they provide advantages like unaffected shrinkage, usability in high doses, and resistance to freeze and thaw cycles.

Accelerating

Accelerating admixtures expedite concrete setting, offering higher early-stage strength. However, they may accelerate steel reinforcement corrosion, depending on the overall recipe.

Corrosion-Inhibiting

Corrosion-inhibiting admixtures slow down steel reinforcement corrosion, reducing the need for maintenance. Popular in precast concrete, they also find use in ready-mix projects.

When ordering ready-mix concrete, consider factors like the distance from the plant to the job site, placement of mixing trucks on the jobsite, terrain characteristics, and environmental conditions.
